Artist Interventions
For both exterior and site-specific installations, Ray Philly is excited to partner with artists of the area and friends of Ray.
Michelle Lopez
We partnered with Philly-based artist Michelle Lopez for an intervention on Ray Philly’s exterior facade. Lopez was interested in playing with the corner edge of the building where it touches the sky, a portal to bigger ideals, bigger imaginative and creative space. The sky is a space that no one owns. For the sake of unity, we are all together “when under one sky.” Photo by Ethan O'Grady
Rashid Johnson
Rashid Johnson’s art includes autobiographical elements inspired by his early intellectual, musical and literary influences. For Ray Philly’s sunken living room, Johnson created a stacked cell system filled with plants, books, sculpture and light. Photo by Ethan O'Grady
Ulises at Ray
Ulises is a bookshop and project space dedicated to artists’ books and independent art publications that explore the relationship between publics and publications. The space provides an inventory of titles not widely distributed in the United States on contemporary art, graphic design, art theory, architecture, criticism, curatorial practice, and adjacent fields. Ulises supports people who make books and expand the boundaries of what art publishing can be.
Hosting projects, exhibitions, and residencies, Ulises’ open-ended programming considers publishing as an incubator for new forms of artistic, editorial, curatorial, and pedagogical practice. Ulises sees the democratic potential of publishing as a vehicle for activism, education, assembly, and exchange.
Ulises at Ray will be located on the ground floor of Ray Philly in artist studio 104.
